I purchased this camera for a specific project. The project involved a three week bicycle tour around portions of Pennsylvania to map old transportation canals that have become rail trails. The camera needed to be light and small as possible, have a decent zoom, and be weather proofed. I also didn't want to be hauling around a very expensive camera that might easily be damaged or stolen. The S1 fit the bill nicely. It is certainly larger and heavier than most bridge cameras, with a total weight of a little over two pounds for the camera, charger, spare batteries, filters, and neoprene cover. The extra weight was more than compensated by the quality of the camera and the tremendous zoom capacity. I added polarizing and haze filters using a screw-on filter mount, which enhanced the outdoor pictures. The 50x zoom worked very well, and many times saved me from having to cross busy roads to photograph roadside history markers and plaques. The weatherproofing held up in a couple of downpours without a problem. A close-fitting neoprene cover protected the camera, and there was not any issues from the constant vibrations from the bicycle. I also used the camera to copy documents and maps at several historical societies. The S1 handled the copying without any problems, and at one visit took over 500 photos on a single battery pack. The one thing that I really would like to see on this camera is a built-in GPS receiver. It's hard to believe that a camera which was designed for outdoor use would not have one. There is an option to piggyback the GPS geotag from a smartphone via an app, but unfortunately I do not use a smartphone. A GPS receiver does draw down the battery, but someone could probably add a software toggle in the menu to turn it off when it isn't needed.Altogether it turned out to be an excellent camera for the job. It performed beautifully, and has a solid feel to it. I'm looking forward to using it on other projects.
